TOGO, A Small Country with a Big Spirit Robert Van Den Hoven, October 3, 2026October 3, 2026 Togo: A Small Country with a Big Spirit Our journey back to Togo was a special one. We first visited in 1978, travelling in an old VW, and returning 33 years later in our expedition vehicle gave us the chance to see how little had changed in 33 years. (except for better roads, Mobile phones and satelite dishes on clay huts) While many people picture busy cities, colourful markets, and the tropical coastline of West Africa, away from Lomé and the larger urban centres there is another side to discover. Togo is known for its colourful culture, traditional music, tropical beaches, welcoming communities, spectacular scenery, and rich traditions. Its capital, Lomé, has lively streets, while the north offers green hills and savannah.Despite its small size, there is plenty to discover. One of the country’s most remarkable sights is Koutammakou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is home to the Batammariba people and their famous mud tower houses, called takienta. Built from earth and shaped like fortified towers, these unique homes are an important part of the community’s cultural traditions. https://www.doubledutchworldsafari.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/TOGO-LOW-RES.mp4 Latest Update
