The city’s colonial architecture, wooden buildings, and historic landmarks reflect its Dutch heritage while blending with Caribbean influences. Popular attractions include Independence Square, Fort Zeelandia, Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral, and the lively Waterfront area, Dutch is the official language, making Suriname unique among South American nations, although many people also speak English, Sranan Tongo, Hindi, Javanese, and several Indigenous languages. This multicultural background is reflected in Suriname’s festivals, traditions, music, and cuisine. More than 90 percent of the country is covered by tropical rainforest, making it one of the most forested nations in the world.
