Nepal Highlights NEPAL GENERAL INFORMATION VIDEO COMPILATION PHOTO GALLERY GENERAL INFORMATION Nepal is often introduced to travelers through a handful of famous names: Kathmandu, Everest, Annapurna, Pokhara and Chitwan. Yet the country is far greater in character than those celebrated destinations suggest. we travelled Nepal overland from Tibet to the Far West, A Journey Through the Himalayas, Heritage and Hidden Nepal Waiting at the Tibet and Nepal border For the overlander crossing into Nepal from Tibet and continuing westward toward the far-western border with India, Nepal becomes a completely different experience. The journey moves from the high, stark landscapes of the Tibetan Plateau into deep Himalayan valleys, ancient towns, terraced hills, forests, river gorges and eventually the subtropical plains of the Terai. The route combine great Himalayan scenery, Buddhist and Hindu traditions, historic cities, remote mountain communities and some of the least-visited landscapes in the country. The final stages into Sudurpashchim, Nepal’s Far West, take the traveler far away from the well-established tourist circuits and into a region where roads are rougher, journeys are slower and tourism infrastructure is much more limited. For overlanders willing to travel slowly, this is precisely the attraction. The Himalaya is not simply a wall separating Tibet and Nepal. For centuries, mountain passes and valleys have connected communities on both sides of the range through trade, pilgrimage, religion and family ties. Today, overlanders can enter Nepal from the China and Tibet side through designated border points. One of the important modern approaches is through the Kodari border. In Tibet, the landscape is broad, dry and open, with immense skies, high plateaus, monasteries and distant snow peaks. As the road descends toward Nepal, the landscape changes rapidly. Mountains become steeper, rivers cut through deep valleys and vegetation becomes increasingly green. The change from the Tibetan Plateau to the Himalayan valleys of Nepal did happen within a surprisingly short distance. The border is therefore more than an immigration checkpoint. Geographically and culturally, it is a passage between two extraordinary worlds. Kathmandu, After entering Nepal, many travelers make their way toward Kathmandu, the country’s cultural and political heart.Kathmandu Valley is a mix of Hindu temples, Buddhist stupas, monasteries, royal squares, courtyards, shrines and traditional neighborhoods exist within a relatively compact area. Kathmandu itself is home to places such as Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swayambhunath and Boudhanath, while nearby Pashupatinath is one of the most important Hindu temples in Nepal. Patan and Bhaktapur provide further opportunities to experience the extraordinary Newari architecture and culture of the valley. The stupa (Boudhanath) lies along an ancient trade route and the surrounding area became an important center for Tibetan communities in Nepal. Kathmandu is also a city of contrasts. Ancient temples stand beside busy streets, incense burns outside centuries-old shrines while traffic moves through the narrow lanes around them. The Earthquake of 2015. The Gorkha earthquake, measured at approximately magnitude 7.6 in Nepal’s official heritage documentation, caused enormous loss of life and widespread destruction. A powerful aftershock on 12 May caused additional damage.Historic monuments throughout Kathmandu Valley were badly affected. Kathmandu Durbar Square, Patan Durbar Square and Bhaktapur Durbar Square all suffered major damage, while temples, monasteries, homes and traditional buildings were destroyed or severely weakened. Over the years, numerous temples and monuments have been restored or reconstructed. Nepalese craftsmen, conservation specialists, local communities, government agencies and international organizations have participated in the long process of rebuilding. Pokhara and the Annapurna Himalaya, The Annapurna region offers some of the world’s best-known mountain journeys. The Annapurna Circuit passes through dramatically changing landscapes, from subtropical valleys to high Himalayan terrain. The Annapurna Base Camp trek leads directly into a spectacular mountain amphitheater. Poon Hill is famous for sunrise views, while Mardi Himal provides another beautiful route through forests and high mountain scenery. Further north lies Mustang, where the environment becomes much drier and more Tibetan in character. Muktinath is especially important because it connects the Himalayan landscape with Nepal’s religious traditions. Located at approximately 3,710 meters, with ancient settlements, monasteries, dramatic cliffs and valleys shaped by centuries of trade and pilgrimage. It is sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists and attracts pilgrims from Nepal, India and beyond. One of Nepal’s most remarkable characteristics is the speed with which the landscape changes.A journey from the high Himalaya can eventually lead to subtropical forests and plains. Chitwan National Park is one of the country’s most famous examples. The park is home to one-horned rhinoceros, Bengal tigers, crocodiles and a remarkable variety of birds. It was established as a national park in 1973 and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. A safari in Chitwan is completely different. Instead of snow peaks and prayer flags, there are sal forests, grasslands, rivers and wetlands. Canoeing, walking, wildlife viewing and birdwatching provide a chance to experience another side of Nepal.Further west lies Bardiya National Park, which offers another important wildlife experience and generally feels quieter and less developed for tourism than Chitwan. The farther west the traveler goes, the more Nepal changes. The major tourist circuits become thinner. Roads can become rougher and travel times longer. Restaurants become simpler, and in many remote areas English is less widely spoken. But this is also where the journey becomes more interesting for adventurous overlanders.Western Nepal contains forests, rivers, high mountains, remote villages, sacred sites, wetlands and landscapes that remain largely unknown outside the country.Karnali is especially important for overlanders looking for remote wilderness. Rara Lake is one of western Nepal’s great natural treasures. At approximately 2,990 meters, it is Nepal’s largest lake and lies within Rara National Park. The lake is surrounded by forested mountains. Rara is often described as the Queen of Lakes. Be aware Roads can be demanding, services are limited and the remoteness creates a sense of adventure. Further into the remote west lies Dolpo, one of Nepal’s legendary wilderness regions. Dolpo is known for high-altitude landscapes, Tibetan Buddhist culture, isolated villages and demanding roads/tracks. Shey Phoksundo National Park contains Phoksundo Lake, one of the most spectacular mountain lakes in Nepal OOOPS we hit the main power line OOOPS we hit the main power line In Dolpo, trekking can mean long days between settlements, limited infrastructure, high passes and challenging logistics. Travelers need to be well prepared and should generally use experienced local guides and operators.Dolpo is for those who want wilderness rather than convenience. Eventually, the journey can continue into Sudurpashchim, commonly known as Nepal’s Far West. This is one of the country’s least visited regions. Sudurpashchim stretches from the high Himalaya in the north through the middle hills and Chure range to the lowlands near India. The region includes spectacular mountains, forests, grasslands, wetlands and religious sites. Among its major attractions are Khaptad National Park, Shuklaphanta National Park, Api Nampa Conservation Area, Badimalika, Ghodaghodi Lake and numerous Hindu pilgrimage destinations. The Far West is Nepal without the crowds. You may spend hours on a mountain roads/tracks without seeing another person. Villages remain deeply connected to traditional agriculture and local culture, and travel often requires patience. Api Nampa Conservation Area is one of the hidden destinations of western Nepal. The region includes spectacular Himalayan landscapes and Mount Api, which rises to approximately 7,132 meters.Remote valleys, forests, high mountain passes and traditional villages make this an extraordinary destination for advnturous overlanders. Here, the Himalaya feels much less commercial and much closer to the traditional mountain environment that has existed for centuries. Khaptad National Park is famous for broad alpine meadows, forests, medicinal plants and mountain wildlife. Its landscape is very different from the dramatic vertical peaks of Everest and Annapurna.Walking through Khaptad can feel almost timeless. There are few visitors, few vehicles and no modern tourism. Badimalika is another remarkable destination in the Far West.Located in Bajura district at approximately 4,153 meters, Badimalika is associated with the temple of Mallika Devi and important Hindu pilgrimage traditions. The journey is demanding, passing through forests, high pastures and remote mountain landscapes. Shuklaphanta National Park, are Ghodaghodi Lake, are other amazing locations. And destinations such as Badimalika, Ugratara, Shaileshwori, Tripurasundari and Baidyanath connect the region with centuries of Hindu pilgrimage. Eventually, the journey can continue south and west toward the Indian border. The western gateways around Dhangadhi and Mahendranagar, also known as Gaddachauki, provide important routes between Nepal and India. Nepal is not one place. It is an entire world compressed between the Himalaya and the plains, a country where every road leads to another landscape, another culture and another story. 2.
