Located along the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, it serves as a gateway between Africa and the Middle East. The capital, Djibouti City, is a lively port where visitors can experience a blend of Somali, Afar, Arab, and French cultures. Djibouti is a multi-ethnic nation with a population of over 921,804 inhabitants the smallest in mainland Africa. French and Arabic are the country’s two official languages, Afar and Somali are national languages. About 94% of residents adhere to Islam, which is the official religion and has been predominant in the region for more than a thousand years. The Somalis and Afar make up the two largest ethnic groups, with the former comprising the majority of the population. One of the country’s most famous attractions is Lake Assal, the lowest point in Africa at about 155 metres below sea level. Its highly saline waters and brilliant white salt flats create one of the world’s most unique landscapes. Another natural wonder is Lake Abbe, known for its towering limestone chimneys and geothermal activity, giving it an almost otherworldly appearance. Djibouti is also a top destination for marine life. The Gulf of Tadjoura offers excellent diving and snorkeling, you can swim with gentle whale sharks in clear, warm waters.
