NORTHERN AFRICA

Northern Africa is a fascinating region where ancient civilizations, vast deserts, vibrant cities, and beautiful coastlines come together. From the iconic pyramids of Egypt to the colourful markets of Morocco, each country offers its own unique landscapes, history, and cultural experiences.

Egypt is best known for the Great Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx, the Nile River, and the magnificent temples of Luxor and Aswan. For overlanders and adventure travellers, Egypt also offers world-class diving in the Red Sea, remote beaches to camp on, you could join a Nile cruise, and thousands of years of remarkable history waiting to be explored.

Sudan is one of Africa’s hidden gems, home to more ancient pyramids than Egypt, traditional Nubian culture, and spectacular scenery along the Nile. It remains a true off-the-beaten-track destination, ideal for overlanders seeking authentic adventure and untouched landscapes.

Libya is renowned for its impressive Roman ruins, including Leptis Magna, vast Sahara landscapes, and rich cultural heritage. Unfortunately, due to the the civil war, the border was closed during our journey, making it impossible for us to enter the country.

Tunisia offers a wonderful mix of Mediterranean beaches, Roman archaeological sites, the Sahara Desert, and charming historic medinas. Although Tunisia is generally considered a safe tourist destination today, the closure of the Libya–Egypt border meant we could not reach Tunisia overland. As a result, instead of shipping our vehicle from Tunisia to Europe as originally planned, we shipped it directly from Egypt.

Morocco is, in our opinion, one of the most touristy and developed countries North of South Africa, Botswana and Namibia in Africa, with many similarities to Southern Europe. It features bustling markets, the famous blue streets of Chefchaouen, the spectacular Atlas Mountains, and the golden dunes of the Sahara, making it a playground for European off-road enthusiasts. Combined with its welcoming people, outstanding cuisine, and diverse landscapes, Morocco has become one of Africa’s most popular destinations for European travellers.

Western Sahara is a sparsely populated desert region of endless open spaces, dramatic Atlantic coastline, and traditional nomadic culture. For overlanders travelling towards West Africa, it offers incredible remote desert tracks, particularly near the borders with Algeria and Mauritania, along with a rare opportunity to experience one of the world’s least populated and most isolated regions.
