  1. General Information

Located in the eastern Caribbean, Barbados is the easternmost island in the region and sits in the Atlantic Ocean. Covering approximately 430 square kilometres , the island is compact enough to explore with ease while offering a surprising variety of attractions and landscapes. Unlike many neighbouring islands that were formed by volcanic activity, Barbados is primarily made of coral limestone, giving it spectacular beaches and fascinating cave systems.

Barbados is one of the Caribbean’s most captivating destinations, offering a perfect blend of stunning natural beauty, rich history, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality. Known for its crystal-clear turquoise waters, soft white sand beaches, and year-round sunshine, the island attracts visitors from all over the world who are looking for both relaxation and adventure.

Long before European settlers arrived, the island was inhabited by Indigenous peoples. The British established a colony there in 1627, and British influence can still be seen today in many aspects of daily life, including the country’s legal system, architecture, and love of cricket. Barbados gained independence in 1966 and proudly became a republic in 2021.

One of the island’s greatest attractions is its breathtaking coastline. The west coast, often referred to as the Platinum Coast, is famous for its calm, clear waters that are perfect for swimming, snorkelling, and enjoying luxury resorts. The south coast offers a livelier atmosphere with bustling beaches, restaurants, nightlife, and exciting water sports. In contrast, the rugged east coast faces the Atlantic Ocean and is known for its dramatic scenery and powerful waves that attract surfers from around the world.

Although Barbados is renowned for its beautiful beaches, there is far more to experience than simply relaxing by the sea. You can swim alongside gentle sea turtles in warm Caribbean waters, explore spectacular underground caves adorned with impressive limestone formations, and discover beautifully preserved plantation houses that tell the story of the island’s past. Another highlight are the green monkeys and colourful tropical birds can often be seen.

Barbados is also recognised as the birthplace of rum, making a visit to a local rum distillery a popular experience.

The vibrant culture of Barbados is another reason why so many travellers return year after year. Music fills the air throughout the island, with calypso, soca, reggae, and jazz creating an energetic atmosphere wherever you go. One of the island’s biggest annual celebrations is the Crop Over Festival, a colourful event featuring elaborate costumes, lively parades, music, dancing, and cultural performances that celebrate Barbados’ heritage. Cricket is another important part of island life, and attending a match offers visitors a wonderful opportunity to experience local traditions and community spirit.

Barbados is home to a remarkable variety of wildlife and Sea turtles regularly nest along parts of the coastline, while vibrant coral reefs provide excellent opportunities for snorkelling and diving among tropical fish.

Getting around Barbados is relatively easy thanks to its reliable network of taxis, rental cars, public buses, and colourful local minibuses. As a legacy of its British history, vehicles drive on the left-hand side of the road.

Barbados offers an unforgettable combination of breathtaking scenery, fascinating history, welcoming people, and exciting experiences. Whether you’re strolling along pristine beaches, or dancing to Caribbean rhythms during a local festival, Barbados truly deserves its reputation as one of the Caribbean’s most treasured destinations.
