1. General Information

Eswatini may be one of Africa’s smallest countries, but it is packed with spectacular scenery, fascinating culture, abundant wildlife, and some of the friendliest people you could hope to meet. Nestled between South Africa and Mozambique, it is an easy country to explore, with mountains, forests, valleys, and game reserves all within a relatively short drive.

We have visited this beautiful kingdom twice, and on both occasions it was known as Swaziland. In 2018, King Mswati III officially changed the country’s name to Eswatini, meaning “Land of the Swazis,” to reflect its cultural heritage and distinguish it from Switzerland.

One of the things we enjoyed most was how authentic the country felt. Traditional Swazi culture remains a proud part of everyday life, and English, along with Siswati, is widely spoken.

Although Eswatini is smaller than many of its neighbours, it offers excellent wildlife experiences. We enjoyed bush camping in Hlane Royal National Park and Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary, where elephants, rhinos, giraffes, zebras, antelope, walked around our Motorhome. For those who enjoy hiking and mountain scenery, Malolotja Nature Reserve offers stunning views, waterfalls, and excellent walking trails.

Eswatini is also well known for its colourful cultural festivals, talented local artisans, excellent handmade crafts and village markets making it a wonderful place to support local communities.

Although the country’s name has changed since our visits, the charm that made us fall in love with it certainly has not. Whether you remember it as Swaziland, as we do, or know it today as Eswatini, this peaceful little kingdom remains one of Southern Africa’s hidden gems and is well worth adding to any travel itinerary.
