Lesotho, officially the Kingdom of Lesotho, is a small, landlocked country in Southern Africa completely surrounded by South Africa. its capital and largest city is Maseru. Lesotho is also unique because its entire territory lies above 1,300 metres in elevation, making it the country with the highest lowest point in the world. The name Lesotho means “the land of the people who speak Sesotho.

Lesotho gained independence from the United Kingdom on 4 October 1966. It is now a constitutional monarchy and a member of the Commonwealth of Nations.Diamond mining is an important industry, with the Letšeng Mine producing some of the world’s highest-value diamonds per carat. Despite its natural resources, Lesotho remains one of the poorer countries in the region. Lesotho has a population of just over two million people. The capital is Maseru, the official languages are Sesotho and English, and the currency is the Lesotho Loti, which is interchangeable with the South African Rand.

Lesotho is renowned for its spectacular mountain scenery, including the Maloti Mountains, crystal-clear rivers, towering waterfalls, and diverse flora and fauna. The Basotho people are known for their colourful blankets, distinctive mokorotlo hats, warm hospitality, and rich cultural traditions.

Tourism is centred on adventure and nature. Overlanders explore remote villages, and tackle the famous Sani Pass in a 4×4. Popular attractions include Katse Dam, the UNESCO-listed Sehlabathebe National Park, the historic fortress of Thaba-Bosiu, Maletsunyane Falls, and Afriski Mountain Resort, one of the few ski resorts in sub-Saharan Africa. The best time to visit is from November to March for warm, green landscapes or from June to August for snow and winter sports.

The landscape is one of Lesotho’s greatest attractions. All of the country consists of highlands, plateaus, valleys and rugged mountains belonging to the Maloti range. The highest mountain is Thabana Ntlenyana, which rises to about 3,482 metres above sea level. These high elevations give Lesotho spectacular scenery, with deep valleys, rocky cliffs, waterfalls and wide mountain horizons.

Maletsunyane Falls is one of Lesotho’s most famous tourist attractions. Located near Semonkong. The waterfall drops dramatically into a deep gorge and has become a symbol of Lesotho’s adventure tourism. Maletsunyane is also famous for its commercial abseiling experience.

Thaba Bosiu, a historic sandstone plateau that played a central role in the formation of the Basotho nation. The nearby Thaba Bosiu Cultural Village provides opportunities to experience traditional Basotho culture, performances and local traditions.

Ts’ehlanyane National Park is situated in the Maluti Mountains, the park is known for its rugged scenery, waterfalls, mountain vegetation and diverse birdlife. Overlanders can explore the area while enjoying and bush camping in the peaceful atmosphere of the highlands.

The capital, Maseru, provides a useful introduction to modern Lesotho. You can experience local markets, crafts, restaurants and cultural attractions before travelling into the mountains. The Basotho Hat, a distinctive building shaped like the traditional national hat, is one of Maseru’s recognizable landmarks and is associated with local crafts and souvenirs.
