1. GENERAL INFORMATION

Officially the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, and formerly known as Burma, Myanmar gained independence in 1948 after a brief period of Japanese occupation and Allied reconquest. Following a military coup in 1962, the country was ruled by a military dictatorship for decades. Throughout much of its modern history, Myanmar has faced deep ethnic tensions and one of the world’s longest-running civil conflicts.

In 2011, the military junta was officially dissolved following the 2010 general election, and a nominally civilian government was established. The release of Aung San Suu Kyi and other political prisoners brought hopes of greater political freedom, improved human rights and stronger international relations, although the country has since experienced renewed political turmoil.

Myanmar, is a fascinating country in Southeast Asia, bordered by Thailand, Laos, China, India and Bangladesh. It is known for its rich Buddhist culture, golden pagodas, and ancient temples. Famous attractions include the temples of Bagan, Yangon’s magnificent Shwedagon Pagoda and the scenic waters of Inle Lake.

Unfortunately, Myanmar was one country we were unable to visit. Ongoing political unrest and armed conflict have made travel difficult and, in many areas, unsafe. Travel restrictions and border closures prevented us from entering the country during our journey. Although we missed the opportunity to experience Myanmar firsthand, it remains a country we hope to explore someday, when conditions are safer and travel is once again possible.
