  1. GENERAL INFORMATION

Pakistan is a country that often remains outside the usual overlander  spotlight, yet those adventurous overlanders who take the time to discover it can find an extraordinary combination of dramatic landscapes, ancient history, vibrant culture, delicious food, and very warm welcoming hospitality. We see Pakistan as a hidden treasure—one that many people overlook—despite the fact that overlanders and tourists are so well looked after when they visit.

Stretching from the Arabian Sea in the south to some of the world’s highest mountains in the north, Pakistan offers an astonishing variety of experiences. The country is home to the mighty Karakoram, Himalaya and Hindu Kush mountain ranges, the historic Indus Valley, bustling cities, peaceful valleys, deserts, archaeological treasures and a coastline along the Arabian Sea.

Pakistan is located in South Asia and shares borders with India, Afghanistan, Iran and China, with the Arabian Sea forming its southern coastline. Its capital is Islamabad, while other major cities include Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, Quetta and Multan.

Urdu is the national language, while English is widely used in government, business and education. Regional languages such as Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashto and Balochi are also widely spoken.

Pakistan is much more than a destination for mountain adventures. It is also a fascinating destination for anyone interested in history and civilisation.Pakistan currently has six UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Mohenjo-daro, Taxila, the Buddhist Ruins of Takht-i-Bahi and neighbouring remains, the Lahore Fort and Shalimar Gardens, the Historical Monuments at Makli, and Rohtas Fort. And the ancient ruins of Mohenjo-daro provide an extraordinary glimpse into the Indus Valley Civilization, while Taxila reflects the importance of the ancient Gandhara world and its connections between different cultures.

Islamabad is a modern capital surrounded by nature. The capital is known for its greenery, wide avenues and setting against the Margalla Hills. You can explore the famous Faisal Mosque, enjoy views from the Margalla Hills and visit museums and cultural attractions. Islamabad also provides a convenient base for exploring nearby historic and natural attractions.

Lahore is the cultural heart of Pakistan. The city is famous for its Mughal heritage, including the magnificent Lahore Fort and Shalimar Gardens. The Walled City provides an opportunity to experience historic streets, traditional markets, mosques and local life.Eating your way through Lahore can be an adventure in itself. From traditional curries and biryani to kebabs, naan and an enormous variety of sweets and street food. The city’s historic importance is reflected in its UNESCO World Heritage listing

The Mountains of Northern Pakistan. These are perhaps Pakistan’s greatest attraction for international adventure travellers is its northern mountain region.

Gilgit-Baltistan is home to spectacular valleys, glaciers, lakes and home to five of the world’s fourteen 8,000-metre peaks and more than fifty peaks above 7,000 metres. Gilgit and Skardu serve as important gateways for mountain adventures, while destinations such as Hunza attract visitors with their dramatic scenery, villages, forts and traditional culture. For Overlanders, hikers, climbers, photographers and anyone who simply loves spectacular scenery, northern Pakistan can be unforgettable.

For the adventurous overlander, Pakistan is a country that keeps revealing new horizons. Beyond the better-known routes lie remarkable destinations such as Multan, Peshawar, Quetta and Dalbandin, where ancient streets, archaeological sites, historic markets, vibrant cultures and magnificent shrines invite you to step far beyond the usual tourist trail.

Then the road turns towards the coast, opening into the vast and dramatic landscapes of Balochistan. The journey becomes an adventure in itself, travelling through remote country and along routes towards the Iran border and close to the Afghanistan frontier. Here, the scenery changes constantly, from rugged mountains and empty deserts to sweeping coastal landscapes, offering the kind of freedom and remoteness that overlanders dream about.

Yet, for many travellers, it is not the roads or landscapes that become the most memorable part of Pakistan. It is the people. Pakistani hospitality, together with the warmth and generosity encountered among the people of Iran, may well be one of the greatest memories of an overland journey through this part of the world.

Pakistan

Wherever you travel, genuine curiosity and kindness can appear when you least expect it. You might arrive in a remote mountain village, explore a centuries-old market or simply park your vehicle for the night on a roadside or in someone’s backyard, only to find yourself welcomed with smiles, conversation and an invitation to share a meal or join a local BBQ. These spontaneous encounters are often the moments that stay with you long after the journey is over.

This human connection is at the heart of the Pakistani overland experience. At the same time, tourism authorities are working to create a more visitor-friendly image of the country while improving facilities and services for travellers. For the overlander, this means a journey that can shift dramatically from first-class highways to challenging remote tracks and true mountain off-road adventures.

International perceptions of Pakistan can sometimes focus heavily on its challenges, overlooking the extraordinary diversity, beauty and experiences that await those willing to explore it. Pakistan is not necessarily an easy country to understand from a distance—and perhaps that is exactly what makes it so compelling.

For overlanders prepared to venture beyond the familiar tourist destinations, Pakistan offers something genuinely special: adventure, off-roading, ancient history, vibrant culture, breathtaking scenery and extraordinary hospitality, all woven together into one unforgettable journey.

Pakistan is, without doubt, a hidden treasure waiting to be discovered for the adventurous overlander.

Pakistan is a destination with enormous potential for curious travellers. From the Karakoram peaks of the north to the historic cities of Punjab and Sindh, from ancient archaeological sites to modern Islamabad, the country offers an extraordinary journey of discovery. We believe Pakistan is a hidden treasure that many people have overlooked for too long. And for those who choose to discover it, the welcome can be just as memorable as the landscapes themselves.
