1. GENERAL INFORMATION

Colombia located in the northwestern part of the continent, Colombia is the only South American country with coastlines on both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. This unique geography, combined with its mountains, rainforests, deserts, and plains, makes it one of the most biologically diverse countries in the world.

The capital city, Bogotá, sits high in the Andes Mountains at an elevation of over 2,600 meters. It is a bustling metropolis known for its colonial architecture, and thriving arts scene, Other major cities include Medellín, often called the “City of Eternal Spring” because of its pleasant climate, Cali, famous for its energetic salsa dancing, and Cartagena, a beautifully preserved colonial city surrounded by historic walls and overlooking the Caribbean Sea.

Colombia enjoys a tropical climate, although temperatures vary depending on altitude rather than the seasons. Coastal regions remain warm throughout the year, while mountainous areas experience cooler temperatures.

Spanish is the official language, and Colombian Spanish is widely regarded as one of the clearest and easiest dialects for learners to understand. The country’s population is known for its friendliness, hospitality, and pride in their cultural traditions. Festivals, music, dance, and colorful celebrations are an important part of everyday life, reflecting the nation’s diverse cultural heritage influenced by Indigenous, African, and European traditions.

Colombia is internationally recognized as one of the world’s largest producers of high-quality coffee. Overlanders can visit and even stay at coffee farms in the famous Coffee Triangle, where they can learn about coffee cultivation, sample freshly brewed coffee, and explore scenic green valleys dotted with charming towns.

For nature lovers, Colombia offers endless opportunities for exploration. The Amazon rainforest is home to incredible wildlife, while the Andes provide spectacular hiking and off road tracks through cloud forests and national parks. The Caribbean coast features white-sand beaches and crystal-clear waters, particularly around the Rosario Islands and Tayrona National Natural Park, where lush jungle meets the sea. Another must do is  the Cocora Valley with its towering wax palm trees, and the colorful Caño Cristales River, often referred to as the “River of Five Colors.”

History enthusiasts will appreciate Colombia’s rich past, from ancient Indigenous civilizations to Spanish colonial settlements. Cartagena’s historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, showcases beautifully preserved colonial buildings, cobblestone streets, churches, and plazas that transport visitors back in time. Museums throughout the country display remarkable collections of gold artifacts, archaeological treasures, and contemporary art.

Tourism in Colombia has grown significantly in recent years as improvements in infrastructure and safety have made the country increasingly accessible.
