Abidjan, serves as the economic capital, while Yamoussoukro is the official political capital. Agriculture plays a significant role in the economy, and Ivory Coast is the world’s largest producer of cocoa beans. Coffee, palm oil, rubber, and cashew nuts are also major exports. The people of Ivory Coast are renowned for their hospitality and vibrant traditions. Music and dance are central to everyday life, with traditional rhythms blending alongside modern African music styles. Festivals are celebrated throughout the year, showcasing colorful costumes, local cuisine, and centuries-old customs that have been preserved by the country’s many ethnic groups. Overlanding in Ivory Coast offers lots of variety. Abidjan is a lively city filled with modern skyscrapers, bustling markets, fine restaurants, and a vibrant nightlife. You can stroll along the waterfront, explore museums, and experience the energetic atmosphere. Yamoussoukro is famous for the magnificent Basilica of Our Lady of Peace, one of the largest churches in the world, and those who love the bush Ivory Coast is home to beautiful national parks and protected forests where elephants, monkeys, antelopes, Taï National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a primary rainforest,while Comoé National Park offers vast savannah landscapes and diverse wildlife. We were looking forward to visiting Côte d’Ivoire which offers some of the most beautiful beaches and bays in the world. The 2010 presidential election led to the 2010-2011 Ivorian crisis and the Second Ivorian Civil War. International organizations reported numerous human-rights violations by both sides. In Duekoue hundreds of people were killed. UN and French forces started military action. Hence all borders were closed and we were unable to enter from Ghana.
