Saudi Arabia is also the birthplace of Islam and holds deep religious significance for millions of Muslims worldwide. The holy cities of Mecca and Medina attract millions of pilgrims every year, while numerous historical landmarks showcase the region’s ancient civilizations and traditions. During our visit in 2010, women were still not allowed to drive. With our right-hand drive motorhome, we were frequently stopped by police who assumed that Clary was driving. Attempts to enter Mecca were denied, as the city is restricted to Muslims only. Under Islamic law, banks are prohibited from charging interest. To navigate this, Saudi banks instead levy fees for lending and pay commissions on deposits. Foreign workers make up nearly 25% of the population. Saudi Arabia has begun opening up to foreign tourists, and notable changes are taking place. Since June 2018, women can drive, and hotels now allow foreign couples though couples must still prove marital status in certain circumstances. However, the country remains politically restrictive: there is no free speech, no alcohol, limited interaction between the sexes, and ongoing concerns about human rights. Saudi Arabia is balancing modernization and tourism with traditional laws and social norms. In recent years, Saudi Arabia has become one of the world’s newest travel destinations, welcoming overlanders and tourist from around the globe. Saudi Arabia offers an impressive variety of natural attractions. The golden sand dunes of the Empty Quarter, one of the largest deserts on Earth, create unforgettable scenery for overlanders. Along the Red Sea coast, crystal-clear waters, colorful coral reefs, and diverse marine life make snorkeling and diving popular activities. The southwestern mountains provide cooler weather, lush landscapes, and picturesque villages, creating a striking contrast to the desert environment. Cities such as Riyadh and Jeddah feature world-class shopping centers, luxury hotels, contemporary architecture, entertainment venues, and vibrant dining experiences. At the same time, visitors can still enjoy authentic Arabian hospitality, traditional cuisine, and cultural festivals that celebrate local customs and heritage. Overlanders and visitors should also respect local customs by dressing modestly in public places and being mindful of cultural traditions. Learning a few Arabic greetings can enhance the travel experience.
