THE AMERICAS 2017-2026 General Information The Americas, also collectively known as America, are a vast landmass made up of North America and South America, connected by the narrow isthmus of Central America. They stretch approximately 14,000 km from the Arctic in the north to the southern tip of South America. The eastern side of the Americas is generally flatter and is dominated by some of the world’s largest river systems, including the Amazon, Mississippi, St. Lawrence, and La Plata river basins. In contrast, the western side is home to major mountain ranges such as the Rocky Mountains and the Andes. The Americas are home to around one billion people, with nearly two-thirds of the population living in the United States, Brazil, and Mexico. The continent is known for its diverse landscapes, climates, cultures, and wildlife. For this course, I have divided the Americas into four major regions: USA and Canada The islands of the West Indies (Caribbean) Central America and Mexico South America
