From the snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains to the shores of Lake Victoria, Uganda offers unforgettable experiences for overlanders and adventure seekers alike. Uganda gained independence from the UK on 9 October 1962. The period since then has been marked by violent conflicts, including an 8-year-long far right militairy dictatorship led by officer Idi Amin. Amin came to be known as the “Butcher of Uganda” for his brutality, and it is believed that some 300,000 people were killed and countless others tortured during his presidency. Additionally, a lengtly civil war against the Lords Resistance army, in the Northern Region has caused hundreds of thousands of casualties. National parks such as Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, is where you can see the endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Uganda is also famous for the source of the Nile River, and vibrant cultural traditions. Uganda is home to many ethnic groups, including the Batwa, often referred to as Pygmy communities. The Batwa are among the region’s oldest Indigenous peoples and have a rich cultural heritage closely connected to the forests where they traditionally lived. Today, many Batwa communities are working to preserve their traditions while adapting to modern life.As overlanders you have the opportunity to stay with them while bush camping in or near their village.
