1. General Information

When we began our around-the-world overland adventure, we decided to tackle the supposedly difficult continents first—Africa, the Middle East, Asia, China, and Russia—saving the more “civilized” countries for last.

Ironically, the USA turned out to be more difficult to enter than any of the 144 countries we’ve visited so far (with only Canada left to go). Even China was easier. Our U.S. visa was initially rejected due to travels in the Middle East a decade earlier, despite having visited the USA multiple times since then, most recently on an ESTA.

Trying to resolve the issue was nearly impossible. Everything had to be done online, and there was no way to speak with an actual person. Seven months later, we were finally asked to fly to Sydney for an in-person interview. Living 4,000 km north of Sydney, this was an expensive ordeal. After spending $3,500 on flights, taxis, hotels, and food, the interview itself lasted just three minutes. The piles of paperwork we had submitted were ignored, but once we showed our website, the visa was approved instantly. Absolutely amazing.

The United States is offering an incredible mix of natural beauty, vibrant cities, rich history, and cultural diversity. Located in North America, the country is made up of 50 states, each with its own unique landscapes, traditions, and attractions. From the Atlantic Ocean on the east coast to the Pacific Ocean on the west, the United States covers a vast area that includes towering mountains, endless plains, and forests.

The United States, the third-largest country in the world by land area, consists of 50 states and includes 326 Indian reservations. It has a population of over 334 million, with Washington, D.C., as its capital (population: 650,000). The largest city is New York, home to 8 million people, followed by Los Angeles with just under 4 million.the United States is a melting pot of cultures, languages, and traditions. English is the primary language, although Spanish is widely spoken in many regions.

Tourism plays a significant role in the American economy, attracting millions of International visitors every year. One of the USA greatest strengths is the variety of experiences it offers. Overlanders find endless opportunities for adventure. The United States is home to spectacular national parks, including the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Yosemite, and the Great Smoky Mountains. These protected areas offer breathtaking scenery, hiking trails, wildlife viewing, camping, and outdoor activities that showcase the country’s remarkable natural beauty.

American cuisine with the classic dishes such as hamburgers, hot dogs, fried chicken, and barbecue are popular, you can also enjoy authentic Mexican, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Indian, and many other international cuisines.

Overlanding throughout the United States is convenient and well-developed. A large network of highways connects cities and towns, major cities also offer public transportation systems, including buses, subways, and commuter trains.

The USA hosts numerous festivals, sporting events, and cultural celebrations throughout the year. Visitors can experience world-famous events such as the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, Independence Day celebrations on July 4th, Mardi Gras in New Orleans, and a wide range of music, food, and film festivals. Sports enthusiasts can also enjoy professional games featuring American football, basketball, baseball, hockey, and soccer.

Hurricanes and tornadoes frequently impact the southern and central parts of the USA. Tornadoes are especially common in “Tornado Alley,” which includes Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Kansas, South Dakota, Nebraska, Arkansas, South Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee, Indiana, Missouri, and Iowa.

America’s Last Frontier Alaska

Alaska is the largest state in the United States and is located in the far northwest of North America. Although it is separated from the rest of the country by Canada, it remains one of the most extraordinary destinations in the United States. In fact it may as well be a different country. Known as “The Last Frontier,” Alaska is famous for its vast wilderness, breathtaking scenery, and abundant wildlife. Despite its enormous size, it has one of the smallest populations of any U.S. state, allowing Overlanders to experience great bush camping in untouched landscapes and a true sense of adventure.Wildlife is one of Alaska’s greatest attractions. As overlanders bushcamping in the wild we often seen grizzly bears, black bears, moose, caribou, and wolves in their natural habitats.

Alaska experiences long, cold winters and mild summers, During the summer months, you can witness the famous Midnight Sun, when daylight lasts for 24 hours in many parts of the state. In winter, Alaska becomes one of the best places in the world to view the spectacular Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis.

Alaska is home to towering mountain ranges, massive glaciers, crystal-clear lakes, dense forests, and thousands of miles of rugged coastline. Denali National Park is one of Alaska’s most famous attractions and is home to Denali, the highest mountain peak in North America.

Takeing the ferry through the scenic Inside Passage and visiting charming coastal towns such as Ketchikan, Skagway, Haines and Sitka, offer a fascinating blend of Native Alaskan heritage, Russian history, and frontier culture.
