General Information South Africa For us South Africa is the country where I would have my holiday if we had only had 3 or 4 weeks a year. It offers everything you can think off when visiting the continent Africa. Great scenery, Great wildlife, Great national parks, Great wildlife parks which include the big 5, Mountains, Gorges, Luxury Game reserves, Great lodges, Great beaches, Coral reefs, Great food and Superb service. The southernmost country on the African continent. Renowned for its great natural beauty and cultural diversity, all of which have made the country a favoured destination for travellers since the legal ending of Apartheid. In south Africa there are 3 groups. The whites (consisting of peoples primarily of British and Dutch ancestry, the blacks (consisting of the San hunter-gatherers of the North Western desert, the Zulu’s of the eastern plateaus, and the Khoekhoe farmers of the southern Cape regions) and last the coloureds (mixed-race people) and ethnic Asians (Indians, Malays, Filipinos, and Chinese). The apartheid regime was opposed by much of the world community, and by the mid-1980s South Africa was the subject of economic and cultural boycotts that affected almost every aspect of life. This changed in 1994 when Nelson Mandela became president. Today South Africa has huge challenges: rising crime rates, ethnic tensions, great disparities in housing and educational opportunities, and the AIDS pandemic. Other issues it faces are the large numbers of well educated South Africans leaving South Africa increasing year after year. This while refugees from other African countries are arriving from Zimbabwe, Malawi and the Congo. The government also implemented new laws and programs designed to improve the economic situation of the marginalized majority. One such strategy, called Black Economic Empowerment (BEE), focused on increasing the number of employment opportunities for people formerly classified under Apartheid as black, coloured, or Indian, improving their work skills, and enhancing their income-earning potential.
