  1. GENERAL INFORMATION

Russia is the largest country in the world, stretching across Eastern Europe and northern Asia and covering an extraordinary variety of landscapes, cultures, and climates. From the historic streets of Moscow and Saint Petersburg to the remote wilderness of Siberia, Russia offers overlanders an experience that combines history, nature, traditions, and adventure. Russia is home to a population of more than 140 million people.  Its enormous size means that no single journey can reveal everything the country has to offer, but exploring even one region can provide a fascinating insight into Russia’s  character and heritage.

The country’s history has been shaped by the rise of the Russian Empire, the Soviet period, and the development of the modern Russian Federation. Overlanders will encounter evidence of this history almost everywhere, from grand palaces and Orthodox churches to Soviet-era monuments and museums.

Moscow, the capital, is famous for the Kremlin, Red Square, and Saint Basil’s Cathedral, whose colorful domes have become internationally recognized symbols of the country. The Moscow Metro is particularly famous for its impressive stations, many of which resemble underground halls decorated with sculptures, mosaics, and chandeliers.

Saint Petersburg provides a very different atmosphere. Founded by Peter the Great in 1703, the city was designed to become Russia’s window to Europe and is renowned for its canals, bridges, elegant avenues, and historic buildings. The Winter Palace, which forms part of the Hermitage Museum, is one of the city’s most important attractions. Saint Petersburg is also known for its connection with Russian literature, music, art, and imperial history.

Beyond the major cities lies Siberia, one of the most extraordinary regions on Earth. Siberia occupies a vast area of northern Asia and extends from the Ural Mountains toward the Pacific Ocean. Although it is often imagined simply as an extremely cold and remote wilderness, Siberia is much more diverse. It contains enormous forests, mountains, rivers, grasslands, lakes, cities, villages, and areas inhabited by indigenous peoples whose traditions have developed over centuries.

One of Siberia’s most known natural attraction is Lake Baikal. Located near the city of Irkutsk, Baikal is the world’s deepest freshwater lake and contains an enormous proportion of the planet’s unfrozen surface freshwater. The lake is surrounded by mountains, forests, beaches, and remote communities, making it a remarkable destination for overlanders.  In winter, when the lake freezes, its surface can become a spectacular world of blue ice, frozen bubbles, cracks, and transparent formations.

Irkutsk is often called the gateway to Lake Baikal and is an important stop for overlanders exploring the region. The city contains historic wooden houses and offers access to nearby parts of the lake. Another interesting Siberian destination is Krasnoyarsk, situated along the Yenisei River and surrounded by dramatic natural scenery. The nearby Stolby Nature Reserve is known for its distinctive rock formations and hiking opportunities.

Siberia also has a rich cultural heritage. Numerous indigenous peoples live across the region, including communities with distinctive languages, clothing, music, beliefs, and traditional ways of life, such as traditional hunting, fishing, reindeer herding, crafts, and other aspects of indigenous culture.

The climate is an important consideration for anyone planning a trip to Russia or Siberia. Russia experiences significant seasonal differences, and Siberia is particularly well known for its severe winters. Temperatures can fall dramatically in some parts of the region, while summers can be surprisingly warm. Summer is generally convenient for sightseeing, and outdoor activities, while winter can provide unforgettable experiences involving snow-covered landscapes and frozen lakes.

Overlanders exploring remote parts of Siberia should plan carefully because distances between settlements can be considerable and roads/tracks are sometimes poor. In remote areas, facilities can be limited, so advance planning is important.

Russia and Siberia are destinations of enormous scale and diversity. Russia’s historic cities provide impressive architecture, museums, art, and cultural experiences, while Siberia offers vast forests, off road driving, mountains, rivers, and indigenous cultures.
