Mali’s past feels alive beneath your feet. Centuries ago, this land was the heart of the Mali Empire—one of the richest and most influential empires in world history. We were incredibly fortunate to meet Ogo and his family, who welcomed us into their home in the Dogon region and allowed us to stay with them while learning about their history, culture, and ancient cliffside dwellings. Life unfolds in mud-brick homes, low-roofed meeting houses, and pointed granaries—architectural forms shaped by centuries of adaptation to the Sahel’s intense heat.
